7 common mistakes to avoid when installing RVT flooring

Installing Rigid Vinyl Technology (RVT) flooring can significantly enhance the aesthetics and functionality of your space. However, several common pitfalls can hinder the installation process and compromise the quality of the finished product. Here are seven mistakes to avoid for a successful RVT flooring installation.

Not Preparing the Subfloor

Proper subfloor preparation is crucial for a successful RVT flooring installation. A clean, dry, and level subfloor provides a solid foundation for the flooring. Failing to address subfloor issues can lead to uneven surfaces, squeaks, or premature wear. Before laying down RVT planks, thoroughly inspect and prepare the subfloor to ensure optimal results.

Skipping Acclimation

RVT flooring needs time to acclimate to the environment where it will be installed. Allow the planks to sit in the installation area for at least 48 hours prior to installation. This step helps the flooring adjust to the room’s temperature and humidity levels, minimizing the risk of expansion or contraction after installation.

Adhering to the manufacturer’s acclimation guidelines is essential for preventing future issues.

Not Allowing for Expansion Gaps

All flooring materials, including RVT, require space to expand and contract due to environmental changes. It is critical to leave appropriate gaps around the edges of the flooring and between different rooms.

If these expansion gaps are insufficient, the flooring may buckle or warp over time. Consult the manufacturer’s recommendations for the necessary gap sizes to maintain the integrity of your flooring.

Incorrect Installation of Click-and-Lock Systems

Many RVT flooring options utilize a click-and-lock installation system, which can be advantageous for ease of installation. However, improper locking techniques can damage the planks and weaken the overall structure. It is vital to follow proper installation techniques to ensure that each plank locks securely into place, maintaining the flooring’s stability.

Inacurate Cutting and Fitting

Precision in cutting and fitting RVT planks is essential for achieving a seamless appearance. Rushing through this process can result in visible gaps, especially around doorways and corners. Take the necessary time to measure accurately and make clean cuts, ensuring a polished and professional finish.

Ignoring Manufacturer's Instructions

Each RVT flooring product comes with specific installation instructions from the manufacturer. Disregarding these guidelines can void warranties and lead to installation complications. Always refer to the manufacturer’s manual to ensure compliance with recommended procedures, as this will help maintain your warranty and prevent potential issues.

Rushing the Installation Process

Lastly, it is imperative not to rush the installation of RVT flooring. Taking shortcuts can result in mistakes that may affect the flooring’s durability and appearance. Approach the installation process with patience and attention to detail, planning each step carefully to achieve optimal results.

By avoiding these common mistakes, you can ensure a smooth and effective RVT flooring installation. With proper preparation and adherence to best practices, you can enjoy the benefits of beautiful and long-lasting flooring in your space.

Maintain the Temperature

Controlling the temperature and humidity in the installation area is critical. Maintain a stable room temperature with no more than a 5°C fluctuation, especially during the 24 hours before and the 48 hours after installation. To minimize temperature changes, use shades or curtains to block direct sunlight, particularly in areas exposed to eastern or western sunlight.

The ideal installation temperature should be between 18°C and 27°C, with the subfloor temperature at a minimum of 15°C. Adhering to these conditions will support a seamless flooring installation process.

Allow for Acclimatization

Before installation, allow the flooring to acclimate to the surrounding environment for at least 24 hours. This means letting the planks adjust to the room’s temperature and humidity. Avoid storing the flooring in temperatures below 2°C or above 40°C to prevent damage.

Always store the RVT planks flat, not upright, to maintain their shape and integrity. Following these steps will prepare your flooring for optimal performance in its new environment.

Gather All Necessary Tools

Before you begin the installation, gather all essential tools to avoid interruptions. This includes a cutting knife, bolster chisel, scissors or Stanley knife, measuring tape, pencil, straight edge, adhesive (for glue-down), lining paper, and a homemade scribing gauge. Having everything on hand will streamline the process and prevent the frustration of searching for missing items mid-installation.

Make Precise Measurements

Carefully planning your layout is crucial before installing LVT or RVT plank flooring. Take accurate measurements and mark your layout accordingly. If using LVT or RVT planks, adjust the layout for a balanced appearance throughout the space. This step is vital for achieving the desired visual effect once the flooring is installed. Proper planning and marking will ensure a neat and professional finish.

Now that you understand the prerequisites, it’s essential to note that the installation method for LVT or RVT plank flooring depends on the specific type of flooring you have. Let’s explore each installation method below.

Installation Methods

Click-Lock LVT or RVT Plank

For beginners, installing click-lock LVT or RVT plank flooring is straightforward. Ensure your planks have both long and short sides designed for easy interlocking. Begin in a corner of the room, measuring and cutting as necessary to fit the space. When locking the planks together, press down gently with your palm for a secure connection. Leave a small 2mm gap at the walls to allow for expansion.

Avoid using a hammer or tapping block to prevent damaging the click connection. Some LVT or RVT brands offer planks that can be installed horizontally, simplifying installation in narrow or tricky areas.

Glue Down LVT Plank

When opting for the glue-down method, it’s crucial to manage the moisture levels in your subfloor to prevent installation failure or warranty issues. Check the moisture content based on your subfloor type—below 2.5% for cement, less than 0.5% for anhydrite, and not exceeding 10% for wood. Always use the manufacturer-recommended adhesive and moisture barrier, and avoid mixing different adhesive products.

Start laying planks from one corner, spreading the adhesive gently to ensure a strong bond. Avoid over-strapping with clamps, as this can lead to issues like seam peaking or misalignment. Use the appropriate trowel size to ensure proper glue transfer and consult your adhesive manufacturer for specific guidelines.

Permanent Full Spread LVT Sheet

For permanent full-spread LVT sheet flooring, apply pressure-sensitive adhesive before laying the sheet. Allow the adhesive to dry slightly to prevent excessive transfer, then position the sheet carefully to avoid wrinkles or bubbles.

When cutting, handle gently to avoid tears, ensuring a smooth finish. Unlike other methods, start installing RVT sheets from the center of the room for optimal results. A rolling pin or floor roller will help remove air and ensure a secure bond.
